Bea Lukowska
Bea Lukowska is a self-taught artist with a background in architecture and buildings conservation. Growing up in Poland, and studying there and later in Germany, Bea developed a particular interest in historical buildings and their urban settings.
The work centres on landscapes, architecture and urban scenes, with a particular love of historic buildings set among greenery and water. Bea works in black and white or in colour, building sketches and drawings in pen, pencil, crayon, ink, markers and watercolour on paper, and experimenting with tone, light and shadow to create a three-dimensional effect. Many of the drawings are of Cambridge, its colleges, bridges and streets.
Bea works from a small studio at home in Cambridge, is a member of the Cambridge Drawing Society, and takes commissions.
Artist Statement
I find great pleasure in sketching and drawing; the creative process gives me a sensation of freedom, autonomy and inner harmony, and it has a soothing influence on me.
Being drawn towards nature refers back to my memories of a happy childhood in Poland, and especially to the sunny summer holidays I used to spend with my family at one of the lake districts near my hometown. Swimming in warm lakes, sailing and fishing on the calm waters, long lazy walks through the fields and woodlands: these experiences made a big impact on my way of seeing nature and on my spirituality.
Heritage architecture drives my imagination back in time and evokes in me feelings of mystery and magic.
