The Fry Art Gallery
Because the gallery operates on a shoestring and is entirely volunteer-run and staffed, its opening days are limited by weather. However, its shows, when open, are well-curated and well worth a visit if you're in Essex.
The Fry Art Gallery opened in 1987 and holds an outstanding collection of paintings, prints, illustrations, wallpapers and decorative designs by 20th-century and contemporary artists with local connections — particularly the Great Bardfield artists who settled in north-west Essex from the 1930s onward, including Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious, John Aldridge and their circle.
Located in Saffron Walden's historic core, the gallery is entirely volunteer-run, admission is free, and there is step-free access. The programme combines rotating displays from the permanent collection with themed exhibitions exploring the wider creative networks the Bardfield circle moved within, alongside contemporary illustration and design.
The Fry Art Gallery is a registered charity supported by the Art Fund, Essex Heritage Trust and The Pilgrim Trust. The 2026 season runs 5 April – 25 October.
