The Garden As A Studio

Over the summer, three artists have made studios in the former home of twentieth-century architect and master planner, Sir Frederick Gibberd, working from its upstairs rooms and spending the season settling into the space, finding new routines and slowly learning the pace of the Grade II listed garden.

Through drawing, photography and film making, the exhibition brings together different ways of looking, listening and finding a way through the landscape - from fallen trees forming new openings, to carefully considered medium-format photographs exploring the varied terrains and sculptures, and a motion picture telling the garden's story through the movements of interpretive dance. The work follows the garden’s edges and shifting entrances, its hidden bridges and changing light; a place that encourages you to slow down, look more attentively and notice what might otherwise be missed.

Alongside these individual responses, a shared space has formed between the artists, creating new friendships, conversations and ways of working together. The exhibition celebrates the Gibberd Garden as a living creative space, where the garden itself becomes the studio, and where Frederick and Pat Gibberd’s belief in art, architecture and landscape continues through a new generation of artists.
