On Mass - Estelle Simpson

19 Sep 2026 - 25 Oct 2026

On Mass is a solo exhibition of paintings by Estelle Simpson, curated by David Cooper.

‘Estelle Simpson presents a magical and contained world, full of symbols and reflections, that draws on a long history of twentieth-century figure painting. Her paintings show how oil paint, applied with directness and candour, can still be the vehicle for the telling of tales, and the revelation of an intricate psychological realm of life and art.’ JP Stonard

Simpson, born in Leeds in 2001, is a painter, writer and curator who lives and works in South London. She paints in oil entirely from her mind's eye, without sitters, life models or photographs, moving between intimate animal studies and life-size figures, and draws on the histories of Surrealist and Symbolist art and of ballet. She graduated from Camberwell College of Arts in 2023 and was selected that year for the New Blood Emerging Art Prize showcase at Saatchi Gallery.

She showed at Station Works earlier this year in Modern Problems, the group exhibition curated by David Cooper and Giovanni Alessandro Morter.
