Wendy Brooke-Smith

Wendy Brooke-Smith is a landscape painter based near Harwich, Essex. She holds a BA in Fine Art from University College Suffolk (now Suffolk University, 2008), having taken a BTEC Foundation Diploma in Art & Design at Suffolk College, and an earlier BA in French from the University of Exeter. Her work moves between urban panoramas of London and the Thames and the fields, sea walls and rivers of coastal Essex, worked in charcoal, acrylic and oil. Solo and joint exhibitions include TIME AND TIDE (The Handbag Factory, London, 2024), VIEWPOINT with Sally Burch (ArtDog London, 2023), NEW GROUND: Discoveries in Landscape (Menier Gallery, London, 2017) and UPSTREAM (Menier Gallery, 2012). Her public commissions include four paintings for the Rolls Building at the Royal Courts of Justice (2017) and an altar-front painting for St Mary & St Leonard's Church, Beaumont-cum-Moze (2021). She was Artist-in-Residence at Ipswich School (2011) and a joint winner of the Anna Airy Award (2006). She is a member of Colchester Art Society and ArtCan.

Artist Statement

My paintings are inspired by contrast and transience in the landscape, by layers of history and human intervention: excavation, regeneration, tidal flow and timelessness.
