Terry Beard
Terry Beard studied Textile Design at West Surrey College of Art and Design and at City of Birmingham Polytechnic in the 1970s. After leaving college she worked as a freelance textile designer and illustrator for many years, combining this with part-time teaching. She has concentrated on the development of her own work for over thirty years and works from a studio in the Huntingdonshire fens. Her work has been exhibited widely in the UK, including The Discerning Eye, Stamford Arts Centre, Salthouse Church, Low Wood Bay Hotel and Babylon Gallery, and she has also exhibited in Venice, Rome, Milan and the USA. She works with agencies involved in rentals and sales to corporate clients.
Artist Statement
My work is an intuitive response to the natural and built environment, evocative of landscape, water and woodland. I am particularly influenced by the Huntingdonshire fens which surround my home and studio. I use a range of materials and processes to convey a sense of place and emotion within the work.
Layers of transparent colour are built up using blank silk screens with a small squeegee in the way you might use a brush, until I achieve the intensity I am aiming for. I also work into the pieces with areas of self-made collaged papers and acrylics. My work teeters between complete abstraction and representation.
