Rachel Maria Scott

Rachel is an emerging contemporary artist who lives in the countryside near Ely, Cambridgeshire. She works mostly in oil, acrylic and graphite.

She began her art career in Canada, where she was influenced by the bold and joyous use of colours by the influential Group of Seven. Living on a remote island in British Columbia, Rachel had initially taught herself to draw using the classical atelier methods shared by Juliette Aristides. She went on to exhibit in a number of juried exhibitions and solo shows in Canada before moving back to the UK.

Her artwork today still combines elements of the classical with elements of post-impressionism.

Artist Statement

Art is my way of celebrating the beauty in the world.

In my figurative work I explore the beauty in soft folds of fat, in cellulite, in wrinkles. All those wonderful dents and wobbles and creases, which society too often shames women for, help to create a riot of colour in the flesh, which I seek to capture with my brush.

My landscapes are inspired by the countryside around me: from the gentle rolling hills of South Cambridgeshire, to the flat wetlands of the Fens. With occasional forays into the North!

I frequently find inspiration in the faces of friends, family and loved ones (including the furry ones) where my art becomes not just a celebration of beauty but also love.
