Emma Procter
Emma Procter is a Cambridgeshire based abstract artist whose paintings are deeply rooted in emotion, connection and the unseen.
Working intuitively, she builds layers of colour, texture and gestural marks, allowing each painting to find its own direction as she works.
Her work often explores what lies beneath the surface, the emotions we carry, the tension between darkness and light and the things that can't be expressed in words.
For Emma, the connection between painting and viewer is deeply important. When someone pauses in front of a painting, discovers something within it, or feels an emotional response of their own, it adds another layer to the work, one that belongs entirely to them.
Artist Statement
I paint intuitively, working in layers and responding to what happens on the canvas. I love the freedom of not knowing exactly where a painting will take me; a colour, a mark or something unexpected can completely change its direction.
There is a strong emotional connection in my work. Painting gives me a way of exploring feelings, connections and experiences that aren't always easy to express in words. I am drawn to contrast, darkness against light, quiet areas against more chaotic marks, and to the way something beautiful can exist alongside something much more difficult.
Words have naturally become part of the way I work too. Every painting has an accompanying poem, sometimes beginning while I'm still painting and sometimes later. The poem isn't an explanation of the painting; it simply belongs alongside it.
