Anne Schwegmann-Fielding

Anne Schwegmann-Fielding has made public art commissions across East Anglia since the early 1990s, working with recycled materials, and has exhibited nationally and internationally.

Transforming the discarded is at the heart of her practice. Shapes cut meticulously from chipped British tableware are combined with broken jewellery and car windscreen glass to make mosaic sculpture. She works intuitively, guided by the pattern and design of each plate. The chinking of cups as she works evokes memories of tea drinking, conversations and laughter. Her work ranges from small chalices and spoons to larger figurative pieces, opulent mirrors, and the transformation of entire rooms.

British ceramic history runs through it, drawing on manufacturers such as Spode, Wedgwood and Burleigh ware and on celebrated designs including willow pattern. Each chipped plate is chosen for its pattern and colour, then shaped and placed alongside makers' marks, so that contemporary artworks are built out of old ceramics. That resonance is not lost on her clients, who bring cracked family china of their own to be incorporated into commissions.

She was awarded an Arts Council DYCP grant in 2023, which gave her time for development and new collaborations and led to her relief sculptures. She is a professional member of BAMM, the British Association of Modern Mosaics, and of Suffolk Craft Society.
